Well it’s Christmas again, and we’re all still here, so let’s get together for some Christmas songs, joy and merriment with the least merry musicians ever to grace the streets of this town – Katie Malco, Velvet Engine and Joel Harries will play at Northampton’s infamous Labour Club on 15th December. Please expect some Christmas songs and mince pies.
Scottish-born Katie Malco writes music that sits quietly somewhere between an aching, serene sadness and a hopeful determination. Somewhere between morbid and elevating. She mourns her past and lays it out on the table for all to see, exposed with twitching nerves.
Armed with only an old telecaster that’s seen better days, a piano – any piano – and her voice, Malco has toured the UK and mainland Europe extensively, both solo and with a super-group live band of ex-Reuben / Tubelord / Tellison members. The spell-binding artist also recently embarked upon a UK tour with Tennessee’s Julien Baker (Matador). Following on from self-produced EP Four Goodbyes and Katie Malco and the Slow Parade, which was recorded in a North London church with Grammy-nominated producer and artist Iain Archer (James Bay, Snow Patrol, Jake Bugg, Luke Sital-Singh), Malco’s most recent EP is a bold collection of piano based compositions recorded live in an old hall with producer Jamie Field (Tall Ships, Tubelord). The EP, Tearing Ventricles, was released on Alcopop! Records, on red 12″ vinyl. The singer-songwriter has since been in the studio writing and recording her as-yet-untitiled debut album.
“Katie Malco has one of those voices that always transfixes.” GoldFlakePaint
“Detailing loss, anger, hope, despair and absolute joy – a piano, a voice and the most vital honesty laid down in song this year.” 405
“Reflective and wishing for things to be a little different, the track takes wistful and wraps it up with a bow.” Dork Magazine
“An undeniably pretty voice….” Rocksound
Velvet Engine is the brainchild of Latina Northamptonian San-D Godoy, described as “Yearning Pop Folk, with a sprightly but reflective soul” by critics.
Counting Laura Marling, Neil Young, & Daughter amongst her many influences, we can expect great things from this new breed of heart-warming folk music & Velvet Engine will be sure to drive it in the right direction with her catalogue of honest and authentic indie-folk songs.
